Trimming Clinics

This course is suited to any horse owner, vet or hoof trimmer/farrier who wants to further their knowledge in hoof care.

These courses are designed to build your knowledge as you attend progressive clinics. Therefore, you start by attending your first course, Day 1, continuing with Day 2, then Day 3, and so on until you have completed all clinics.

The first half of the day is spent learning the pathology behind a basic trim. The afternoon is spent applying that knowledge to your trimming skills guided by your experienced instructors applying the Equine Orthopaedic Balance® trimming principles.

Course attendees who complete all 14 one-day Basic Trimming Courses will be issued a Certificate of Attendance by the Board of Equine Orthopaedic Balance® in Australia.

Basic Trimming Course - Day 1

The Day 1 clinic will cover:

Basic hoof anatomy
How the hoof works
Basic tool handling
Equine Orthopaedic Balance® trimming principles.

It is not necessary to bring your own horse, you can pair up with a friend and have two people work on one horse together. However, we do strongly encourage you to bring your own horse to learn on.

Basic Trimming Course - Day 2

The Day 2 clinic will expand your knowledge in:

Basic Hoof Pathology; and
Basic Hoof Biomechanics.

This course is suited to any horse owner, vet or hoof trimmer/farrier who wants to further their knowledge in hoof care. The course includes half a day of theory and half a day of guided trimming.

The Day 3 clinic will expand your knowledge in:
- Basic Equine Anatomy;
- What is Orthopaedic Balance?; and
- The Consequences of Incorrect Orthopaedic Balance.

Includes an afternoon of advancing your trimming skills guided using Equine Orthopaedic Balance® trimming principles.

Basic Trimming Course – Day 3

The Day 3 clinic will expand your knowledge in:

Basic Equine Anatomy;
What is Orthopaedic Balance?; and
The Consequences of Incorrect Orthopaedic Balance.

The Day 4 clinic will expand your knowledge in:

Basic Equine Neurology;
The Central Nervous System;
The Peripheral Nervous System; and
Why this is relevant to trimming our horses?

Basic Trimming Course - Day 5

The Day 5 clinic will expand your knowledge in:

Basic Equine Locomotion;
Loading Principles & Locomotion;
Balance Principles - Long Toe & Low Hind Affect; and
Basic Limb Flight

Basic Trimming Course - Day 6

The Day 11 clinic will expand your knowledge in:

How to determine the origin of compensation;
Do you know the basic questions to ask the horse?;
Postural instability; and
Orthopaedic balance observation strategy;
Observation Strategy in the clinical environment.

EOB Trimming Principles;
Optimizing hoof health;
The adaptable foot;
Understanding Abnormal Structure; and
EOB Shoeing Principles

Basic Trimming Course - Day 8

The Day 8 clinic will expand your knowledge in:

Traditional farriering principles;
Consequences of imbalance; and
Effects of hoof neurology on equine posture

Dysfunctional pathology;
The basis of formulating an effective treatment strategy;
The relationship to Biomechanics of the Equine; and
Bringing it all together in a clinical environment.

This course Day 10 is opened to any horse owner, vet or hoof trimmer/farrier who has attended the appropriate number of proceeding numbered day courses, that wants to further their knowledge in hoof care. These trimming courses are designed to further your hoof care knowledge.

The course will cover half a day of theory and half a day of trimming. We will cover anatomy in the hoof and a little upper body, as well as the importance of the hoof balance and hoof upper body connection. There will also be a component about tool handling and trimming theory.

Dysfunctional Pathology – what is really happening inside;

This course Day 10 is opened to any horse owner, vet or hoof trimmer/farrier who has attended the appropriate number of proceeding numbered day courses, that wants to further their knowledge in hoof care. These trimming courses are designed to further your hoof care knowledge.

Understand when change is possible;
Postural instability;
Consequences of change in center of mass; and
Central Pattern Generators.

This course Day 13 is opened to any horse owner, vet or hoof trimmer/farrier who has attended the appropriate number of proceeding numbered day courses, that wants to further their knowledge in hoof care. These trimming courses are designed to further your hoof care knowledge.
The course will cover half a day of theory and half a day of trimming. We will cover anatomy in the hoof and a little upper body, as well as the importance of the hoof balance and hoof upper body connection. There will also be a component about tool handling and trimming theory.

Basic Trimming Course - Day 13

The Day 13 clinic will expand your knowledge in:

Treatment Strategies - aims and objectives;
What could we use to identify dysfunction?
Basic Equine Locomotion;
The neuro-muscular reaction on the body's centre of gravity.

This course Day 14 is opened to any horse owner, vet or hoof trimmer/farrier who has attended the appropriate number of proceeding numbered day courses, that wants to further their knowledge in hoof care. This trimming course is designed to further your biomechanical knowledge through biomechanical medicine.

As this is the last course offered in these basic trimming clinics, we will answer some of the most through provoking challenges the horses are faced with every day. And how the horse has evolved over years of evolution to develop the single digit bone called the distal phalanx or commonly known as the pedal bone so it can cope with the speed, stress and loading forces placed upon it when completing its daily task and withstanding the constant forces of gravity.

Basic Trimming Course - Day 14

The Day 14 clinic will expand your knowledge in:

Advanced Orthopaedic Trimming Principles;
The science of equine biophysics;
Orthopaedic loading of the distal interphalangeal joint;
EOB’S Orthopaedic Trimming Principles; and
The interrelationships of hoof balance and biomechanics.

The day will conclude with students receiving their completion certificates and an evening celebrating your achievements.
